Adult Detention Release Paths
The Sedgwick County Detention Bureau describes the Adult Detention Facility as a central entry point for county custody. It receives people booked by municipalities across Sedgwick County and can hold people under local, state, federal, parole, or other authority. Ending the Sheriff hold can therefore lead to several outcomes. A person may post bond, receive an own-recognizance order, complete a local sentence, or leave under another court order. The person may instead be transported to KDOC, another county jail, a federal custodian, or an immigration authority.
Use custodian-specific language. “Released from Sedgwick County Sheriff custody” says what the record proves. It does not claim that all confinement ended. A transfer line names continuing custody, while bond or an own-recognizance release usually points toward the community under court terms. Even then, the district or municipal court file remains important because it shows the case status, bond order, and later hearings. The Sheriff release event closes one custody episode, not the whole case.
| Recorded event | Best next source |
|---|---|
| Bond or court release | District or municipal court docket |
| Transfer to KDOC | KASPER and KDOC records |
| Transfer to another jail | Receiving county and release sheet |
| Federal handoff | Federal docket, USMS, or BOP |
Confirm Adult Detention Release
The Sheriff Inmate Search is useful only as a current-custody starting point. Search by first and last name and record the identifiers actually displayed. The Sheriff warns that rapidly changing locations may not appear at once. If the name disappears, use the official release-date channels instead of declaring a release. The strongest proof is an episode-specific booking/release sheet read with the court order that controlled the event.
- Check the live Sheriff search and match the correct person with the available booking or Name ID facts.
- Call the automated information service at 316-660-5245 and listen for release-date information. The announcement is older, so confirm the present menu.
- Search Kansas VINE for the adult county-jail event, then distinguish release from transfer or escape.
- Review the Eighteenth Judicial District or correct municipal case for the bond, dismissal, sentence, or commitment order.
- Request the existing release sheet when a durable agency record is needed.
Adult Detention Release Records
A focused request asks for an existing record, not a new explanation. Use the Sedgwick County KORA request channel or contact Sheriff Records at 316-660-3888. Identify the adult by full legal name, known aliases, Sheriff Name ID if known, booking date or narrow date range, and case number. The county warns against sending birth dates or Social Security numbers through ordinary email. Use an approved secure channel when sensitive identifiers are necessary.
Ask for the booking/release sheet or jail face sheet “as maintained in the ordinary course.” Useful public fields may include booking time, facility, charge and case number, release date and time, release reason or authority, bond facts, and the receiving agency when custody transferred. Not every field will exist or be open. Permit lawful redaction and ask for a statutory basis if material is withheld. KORA generally requires action within three business days, but that can be a production estimate or denial explanation rather than the completed record.
- Release
- The end of the Sheriff custody episode shown in the record.
- Transfer
- A change of custodian, not proof of return to the community.
- Discharge
- The end of a stated sentence or supervision obligation, usually a KDOC term when used in KASPER.
- Detainer
- A request from another authority that can affect when or where custody ends.
Adult Detention Records Contact
The primary facility contact is the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility at 141 W. Elm, Wichita, Kansas 67203. The automated information number is 316-660-5245. Sheriff Records can be reached at 316-660-3888 for questions about existing Sheriff records. These channels have different jobs: the automated line is the quick release-date check, while the records route supports a formal booking/release document.

For a face sheet showing incarceration dates, Detention Administrative Services lists jail-lobby service Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and a fee of $0.25. A person’s own rap sheet is free within 24 hours after release and $0.25 afterward; another person’s rap sheet requires a court order. Those personal-record products are narrower than a full release sheet.
Adult Detention Property Release
The Sheriff publishes detailed rules for release of inmate money and property. The main jail front lobby operates seven days a week from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The agency recommends avoiding the 6:30 to 7:15 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. shift changes. A recipient must be present and bring a physical, unexpired driver’s license, state identification card, passport, or military identification. The person in custody controls the one-time release of the property or funds.
These hours do not establish when a person leaves custody. They govern a separate property transaction. A long lobby wait, a completed property pickup, or the release of money cannot substitute for the booking/release event. This distinction matters when family members are coordinating support: check custody through the automated line or VINE, then treat the property process as its own task. The Sheriff also cautions that processing can take time.
Note: Property-section activity is reported at roughly 32,000 intake and release transactions yearly, not 32,000 unique people or community releases.
Adult Detention Annex Distinction
The main jail and the Sheriff’s Annex are parts of the same detention operation. The Annex opened in 2019 at 701 W. Harry in a building once used for work release. It now functions as detention space similar to the main facility. That history can cause a serious search error because the KDOC Wichita Work Release Facility is a separate state institution at another address. A person at the Annex remains within the Sheriff search and county release-record path.
A person at Wichita Work Release is followed through KASPER and KDOC. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Annex Facility page explains the county annex route in context. Do not switch to KASPER merely because an old reference calls the Annex building a work-release site. First identify the current custodian, then use that custodian’s record system.
Adult Detention ICE Transfers
An immigration detainer asks a jail to maintain custody for up to 48 hours beyond the otherwise applicable release so the Department of Homeland Security can assume custody. The request does not prove that the handoff occurred. Read the Sheriff release destination first. If it identifies ICE, follow with the Online Detainee Locator System or the responsible Enforcement and Removal Operations office.
ODLS includes some people currently detained and people released from ICE custody during the preceding 60 days. A positive match can document the immigration layer after the county event. No result is weak evidence because timing and covered categories affect visibility. Never infer immigration status from a name, language, or birthplace. Use the county destination and a positive receiving-agency record.
Adult Detention Court Check
Sedgwick County bookings can arise from district court or a municipal court. The Eighteenth Judicial District handles state felony and misdemeanor matters, while Wichita ordinance cases remain in Municipal Court. Identify the case number and court shown with the charge. A judge controls bond type and amount, and a docket entry may show release, dismissal, time served, probation, or a commitment to KDOC.
A court order and physical release are related but distinct events. Jail processing or another hold can intervene after a judge signs an order. Conversely, the Sheriff release sheet may show the exact custody-ending time without explaining the final case outcome. Pairing both records supplies the cleanest account. The full Sedgwick County release search and records sequence is available on the released inmates home page.
For a precise match, compare the Sheriff booking number or Name ID with the court case number and booking date. The requested sheet may also identify the arresting agency, booked charges, bond type and amount, warrant or court authority, and receiving agency. Ask for those existing fields if maintained, but do not assume they will all appear in one document. A release reason such as time served describes how the jail custody ended. The sentencing journal entry is still the stronger source for the credit calculation and remaining case terms.
Older events require a different starting point because the current roster is not an archive. Begin with the district or municipal court case, then submit a narrow KORA request for the known booking episode. If the record identifies KDOC, continue by KDOC number in KASPER. If it names another county or federal authority, confirm through that receiving agency. This sequence preserves the difference between an old county release and a transfer whose confinement continued.
